The Third Eye podcast is back, and we’re taking a trip to Zambia to listen to the sounds of Zamrock. Since writing a review about Zamrock pioneers WITCH and their new album, I’ve been listening a bit more to the genre, and I dig it.

What is Zamrock, you ask? One way to define it is a musical genre that emerged in Zambia in the early Seventies, a fusion of traditional African music and psychedelic rock, garage rock, hard rock, blues, and funk. Major influences include popular bands like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Cream, and Deep Purple.

Rikki Ililonga and his band Musi-O-Tunya are usually regarded as the inventors of Zamrock, but other pioneers of the style include WITCH, The Peace, Amanaz, Chrissy “Zebby” Temblo, and Paul Ngozi and his Ngozi Family.

The set list for this episode includes:

  1. WITCH
  2. Chrissy Zebby Tembo
  3. Rikki Ililonga
  4. Shane Cooper & MABUTA
  5. Penza Penza
  6. Ngozi Family
  7. Dazed Sun Lemonade

Check out the link to the episode below. Zamrock is seeing a recent resurgence in interest lately, so let’s celebrate by listening to its sounds.
