The Third Eye

Jeffrey Silverstein is releasing a new EP this summer, Roseway. He has already released the first single, “Gassed Up,” which will be on heavy rotation for me. Roseway is due June 14th, and the new song takes Jeffrey’s signature cosmic country and adds a heavy dose of funk.

The EP title – Roseway – is named after the quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in Northeast Portland where Silverstein lives. Like the quiet neighborhood, we’re told the six tracks on the new EP are relaxing and meditative, likely good for chill summer afternoons and lazy Sundays. Silverstein mixes it up with pastoral ambient instrumentals and plainspoken lyrical tunes on the new EP that provide the immaculate twang and groove we’ve come to expect from him.

“To him, these songs feel like home. It’s New Age for the everyman: more cosmic than country and more accessible than esoteric. This is what cosmic country sounds like in 2024,” the Bandcamp notes say.

Roseway picks up where Silverstein’s acclaimed 2023 LP Western Sky Music left off, with Jeffrey trading solo recordings for an expansive full-band sound. The rhythm section from Western Sky Music is back on the new EP, featuring drummer Dana Buoy and bassist Alex Chapman. Pedal steel player Connor Gallaher is also featured on Roseway. Jeffery says he views EPs as moments to try new things and experiment, and the partnership with Dana and Alex allowed him to take risks he usually wouldn’t.

“Gassed Up” is another marvelous Silverstein track, as he adds more boogie to the cosmic twang. His laid-back, baritone voice guides us on his trip through the leafy Portland neighborhood the EP is named after, with Gallaher’s pedal steel adding astral flourishes and Chapman’s bass laying down an incredible groove. Good stuff, as always.
