New Music: ‘I Didn’t Mean To b/w Not Ready Yet’ by Alien Eyelid

The Houston-based cosmic cowboys and gals Alien Eyelid returned in January with a pair of new songs, building on the strength of their fantastic 2023 LP Bronze Star. The five-piece Texan group is the quietest who’s who of the Houston music scene, born out of the burnout of post-everything.

Bronze Star was one of my favorite releases of last year (which I reviewed here for Petal Motel), and I was excited to hear these two new tracks, “I Didn’t Mean To” and “Not Ready Yet.” Alien Eyelid is a group that makes music that very much sounds like it could’ve come from any era, and it’s the type of down-home Southern comfort that’s squarely needed in today’s age.

Tyler Morris’ sugary, sweet vocals shine on  “I Didn’t Mean To,” a song that blends the twang of traditional country with touches of pixie dust. The dreamy pedal steel guitar licks, ethereal harmonies, and familiar harmonica evoke visions of dusty Texas highways under a canopy of shimmering stars.

“Not Ready Yet” has a little more Southern drawl, where the enigmatic Alien Eyelid troubadours sing of jukeboxes and lonely cowboy bars. It’s another cosmic rodeo ride, drifting through the mists of time and nostalgia. “Let it haunt you all night long, but don’t let it go,” Morris sings.

The Third Eye loves these two new Alien Eyelid tracks just as much as the bittersweet melodies of last year’s Bronze Star. We think you will, too, if you like the type of Americana that embraces the boundary-pushing spirit of psychedelia and combines it with the traditions of the best country music. Enjoy!
