New Music: ‘Faces [Where Is Life]’ by MaidaVale

Swedish psych-rockers MaidaVale are back with a new single, “Faces [Where Is Life],” off their upcoming album Sun Dog, and I’m here to tell you it’s worth a listen. Since emerging from the Stockholm underground a decade ago, the band has captivated European audiences and gained a following with their spirited energy and inventive music.

Sun Dog will be their third studio album and the first release on their label Silver Dagger, dropping on May 3rd. The ladies in MaidaVale are known to combine neo-psychedelia and krautrock with influences ranging from post-punk, funkadelia, and North African blues. Quite the enticing melting pot there!

“Faces [Where Is Life]” is a brief, funky track that reminds me of the band’s fellow psych-freak Swedes, Goat. True to their influences, the new single combines the experimental tendencies of neo-psychedelia with funk and a dash of world music vibes for a song that will leave you craving the rest of the upcoming album.

Listen to the new single below:

MaidaVale quickly took on big European rock festivals after their acclaimed debut album Tales of The Wicked West in 2016. Their more krautrock-influenced second album, Madness is Too Pure, confirmed their status in the psych underground and won them the Swedish music prize P3 Guild in the rock category alongside acts like Graveyard.

On the new album, Sun Dog, the band says they paint with a larger, bolder, and brighter color palette, immersing themselves more than ever into their unique take on neo-psychedelia. I didn’t get a chance to listen to the new album in its entirety, but I love the single, so I’m excited to hear the rest.

If you like “Faces [Where Is Life]” by MaidaVale, check out their previous two albums to gear up for the release of Sun Dog in May. Fans of acts like Jess and The Ancient Ones, Ruby The Hatchet, and even Greenleaf should enjoy this group. MaidaVale has some stoner rock tendencies, but the touches of krautrock make them unique. Enjoy!
