The Third Eye

The Janitors have been a formidable presence in the European rock underground since forming in 2004. The Stockholm, Sweden-based group is known for combining heavy drones with sinister garage rock freak-outs, and they’re back with a new song, “Anger The World.” The track is the first single off The Janitors’ forthcoming album, An Error Has Occurred, due May 24th.

The Janitors say they are “peddlers of heavy drones and fuzzed nightmares,” they sure aren’t kidding. I hadn’t heard of them before discovering “Anger The World,” and I’m glad I did. Two decades of activity for the Swedish psych-rockers have been informed by heartbreak, loss, and the dismal state of the world. The group says these two things intertwine constantly: “What’s personal is political and vice versa.” 

“Everything’s been fucked since David Bowie died or they started up the Hadron Collider,” say The Janitors on Bandcamp. The band channels its frustration onto the new record, the songs suiting the mood of sticking a middle finger up to the oppressive world around us. An Error Has Occurred was recorded live over two days and nights in a converted missionary church, unlike previous recordings from The Janitors that were often layered up gradually.

“Anger The World” combines Melvins’ menace with The Stooges’ swagger. It is a song with plenty of distortion and noise-rock tendencies. It’s evident that the Janitors lean toward anarchism, and it’s just as apparent they love the rebelliousness of punk rock. “Anger The World” encapsulates these characteristics in a blistering track that takes psychedelic rock and runs it through the blender of punk, garage rock, and pure rock fury.
